Along with excruciating temperatures and outrageous electric bills, Arizona summers can also bring some unwanted company. I, myself have been dealing with scorpions and ants. The good news is there are some simple, inexpensive precautions you can take that will keep the bugs out and can even help to reduce the cost of your electric bill:
- First, you should start by sealing the exterior of your home. Take a few moments and look at the bottom of your home where the foundation meets the wall. Typically, there are gaps that can allow unwanted pests to enter your home. A good way to check for gaps is by using a compact mirror. If you don’t have a compact mirror, any mirror will work.
- Once you identify where they are located, seal the gaps with a good quality, 35-year, clear latex caulk. Check the entire body of the outside of your home and if you find any holes you can seal them with patch stucco. If the hole isn’t more than one inch, you can use caulk. Another source for bugs to enter your home is through the windows and doors. Make sure to check to inside and outside of each window and seal any cracks with the same caulk. Don’t worry – it’s paintable!
- In addition, check the entire perimeter of each door. If you happen to see light shining through purchase some foam, vinyl or rubber weather stripping, depending on your particular door.
All of the items I’ve mentioned above (35-year latex caulk, pre-mix stucco, foam, vinyl or rubber weather stripping) can be purchased at your nearest home improvements store. By completing these simple, inexpensive tasks, you can save on your electric bill and prevent the unwanted bugs from outstaying their welcome.
